    Factors Driving Stock Price

A Conversation with EP Wealth Advisors Director of Portfolio Strategy - Adam Phillips, CFA®, CFP®

Often quoted in major national media, Adam is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®), a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®), and has been included on the Forbes Next Gen Best-in-State Wealth Advisors 2019 list. He is a member of the CFA Society of Los Angeles and the CFA Institute. Adam helps establish asset allocation strategy as a member of the EP Wealth Investment Committee, which supports all EP Wealth Advisors and their clients. The Committee’s top-down approach to portfolio construction begins with an outlook on the economy’s likely direction, followed by the implications for different economic sectors and asset classes. This culminates in strategic selection of the individual stocks, bonds, mutual funds or other investments deemed most appropriate for each individual client’s portfolio.

Seek Out Diverse Opinions on Market Forces

Whether it’s short-term moves or long-term trends, it’s no surprise there are many different opinions on what’s motivating the behavior of the stock market at any given time. As financial advisors, we’re fortunate to have lots of research at our disposal, including services we subscribe to. It’s essential not to rely on just one source of information. We research broadly across many financial resources such as The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s and the Financial Times. Just as you diversify your portfolio, you want to diversify your media to get other perspectives. You don’t want to see just what confirms what you already feel.

Headlines Are What is Driving the Stock Market Short Term

News that accompanies current events offer a prime example of short-term, headline-driven market movements. For example, any time there’s been a hint of a resolution on trade, we often see the market respond favorably. Then, perhaps a day or two later, we see that maybe talks aren’t going as well as everyone thought—and we see the market sell off.

Fundamentals Drive the Stock Market Over the Long Run

The fundamental values of the companies we own and the longer-term economic outlook are what guide our decisions, not whatever breaking news topped the headlines today. It’s important to avoid the trap too many investors fall into—reading too much into those headlines and into the noise.
