While both corporate and municipal bonds are facing difficult fiscal headwinds, Holman pointed out that, “municipals are cheaper than corporates on a tax-equivalent yield basis and historically offer better default protection.”

Brian Parker, interviewed for the article, says it’s a common mistake to not look at the life expectancy of the spouse, who may be dependent on the benefits for many years. Rather than maximizing income early in retirement, “maybe Social Security should be looked at as old age insurance as we continue to live longer.”
